Plastic is showing up everywhere

By Sara McDonald
The Daily News

Dear Plastic,

I know normally, you’re not so cozy. But lately, you’ve gotten pretty cute. And lucky for you, you’re in style this spring. I realize you might be upset that those puffy spacemen jackets, shiny Judy Jetson skirts and other variations of futuristic plastic fashion aren’t catching on — although the rest of the world rejoices — but never fear.

You’re gradually creeping into the wardrobe of everyone. I think you’ve finally grown up from Livestrong bracelets, rain boots and lunch kits. Last year, it was your crystal clear Lucite beads — which I still enjoy from time to time. Now, you’re just about everywhere an accessory can be.

Plastic bags aren’t just for the garbage cans anymore. Plastic purses — tote bags that will withstand the rain, not stain and keep their shape — are showing up on the arms of trendsetters. A black and white striped plastic tote — a mere $18 — by British designer Suzy Shier is on my shopping list. It’s the perfect solution for a day at the beach that transitions to a casual night on the town.

Oh plastic, you didn’t stop there. I know plastic shoes have been around for a while — I remember with great fondness my Jellies from when I was 5 — but this year, plastic shoes are edgy, fresh and even dressy. A vast improvement on your embarrassing, although comfortable, Crocs that defy all fashion rules.

Perhaps I can’t afford the $500 plastic heels by Robert Clergie — the hollowed out black and red wedge with a sharp ankle strap. I’ve found some eager substitutes. Such as the eco-friendly recycled plastic heels made by Melissa Shoes — a red peep-toe kitten heel for under $60 that has a bit of futuristic flare. I haven’t yet mentioned jewelry, but that’s the biggest news. Not just the bright-colored plastic beads popular now for years. The newest plastic pieces have sharp lines, sleek surfaces and can be as dressy as needed.

Bulky cuff bracelets take on new flair with grooves and engraved designs. Long metal chains link small plastic shapes for a fun necklace that can update any outfit. Earrings are big and bright without being heavy. What more can I say? Besides that — because all this is made of plastic — it’s less expensive than your metals, fabrics and leathers. Not to call you cheap, of course.

See you in stores, Sara

Discount Designer Purses - A Handbag Defines a Woman’s Outfit

from Factory Outlet Handbags

A handbag defines a woman’s outfit, and adds the finishing touches that all women enjoy having to contribute to an attractive and stylish appearance. Having the proper bag for most women is as important as having the proper pair of shoes, wearing the right dress, having appropriate earrings, or any other type of jewelry or accessory. In fact, accessorizing a person’s appearance through use of the right bag is something that most women learn at a very early age and it is a lesson that sticks with them for a lifetime of fashion consciousness.

A young woman for instance may decide that a shoulder style handbag is more appropriate for her looks and her lifestyle than some of the more formal bags that older women wear. Many times young women carry bags that are quilted or made of denim fabric. Others prefer a handbag made of leather or another material that is water resistant. The choices are many, and no one type of handbag is more right than any other as it comes down to personal preference.

Bags Change with Age
When a woman becomes more mature the type and style of handbag she carries is still quite important, but the style will probably change. A career minded woman will want to carry a bag that is practical and businesslike, and yet still feminine. Many times a woman will carry a leather bag made by a well known designer. Some will go for a retro looking handbag, others a replica handbag that resembles the designer bag. Still others will go for top quality in a bag preferring a name like Gucci over some of the handbags that are perceived to be less stylish.

Handbag Purse How Do You Match It?
A handbag purse is a wonderful accessory that complements any given outfit, and if chosen correctly, will even enhance its beauty. However, do you know how to match …..Whatever handbag a woman chooses to carry, the choice is an individual one. Picking the handbag that is right for her is a woman’s prerogative. Men, when choosing gifts for women should keep in mind the types of bags they have seen the woman carry in the past. When in doubt it is always wise for a man to ask another woman, perhaps the sales person in the store, for advice on choosing the right bag. A Skilled sales person can get an idea of a person’s lifestyle and help choose the proper bag. Whatever the choice made happens to be, a handbag is an individual accessory, but all women carry them.

Enjoy Maximum Style With A Discount Handbag
Every woman knows that accessories are the key to accentuating an outfit, but beyond looking pretty it’s rare to find an accessory that actually does anything.

The New 'It' Bags

Nicola Ruiz, FORBES

A Chloe Paddington for $2,100? That's nothing. A Fendi Spy bag for $3,300? Pocket change.

For serious shoppers seeking the ultimate status symbol, nothing compares with the white alligator and diamond Chanel bag, which costs a disarming $260,150. Or, for the slightly more frugal, the $42,500 Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork tote.

It used to be that a simple, versatile black bag would do for both day and night. So when did the designer purse phenomenon reach such epic proportions?

Barbara Atkins, fashion director of Holt Renfrew Canada, says the "it" bag craze began when Hermes designed the Kelly bag for Grace Kelly, which became famous in 1956 when the princess appeared in Life magazine with it on her arm. The Kelly was followed by the Birkin bag, named after actress Jane Birkin. Today a coveted Birkin can command hundreds of thousands of dollars (following several years on a waiting list).

What's Your Office Style? Even as stocks fall, this luxury sector continues on its positive trajectory. Luxury spending on apparel and accessories in the U.S. totaled $800 million in January, according to Kamalesh Rao, director of economic research for Mastercard Advisors, a macro-economic report that tracks U.S. retail across all spending. This marks an 8% increase over luxury spending in 2007. Meanwhile, online retailer eluxury.com reported sales of luxury handbags (those over $500) increasing by 11% last year, confirming that luxury bags have maintained their must-have status.

"When it comes to these bags, customers have really stretched themselves," says Atkins. "It's not uncommon today to see people wearing outfits from H&M or Zara with a $2,000 purse on their shoulder."

That's in part due to a "need" created by celebrities. "Today's customers go online constantly to follow celebrity style--they're checking out what comes down the runway before it even gets a mention in the magazines," says Atkins. "They clamor to get on waiting lists, scarcity breeds excitement and the new 'it' bag is born."

The ultimate allure of a handbag, however, is that one size fits all. "It represents something from high fashion that any woman can wear, regardless of her body type," says Jayne Mountford, vice president of trend reporting for Stylesight, a New York-based trend forecasting company.

While rent-a-bag companies serve the masses, true luxury spenders want exclusivity, and design houses like Louis Vuitton and Chanel are rising to the challenge.

The Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork bag, launched in December to an already sold-out audience, was assembled from 14 different LV bags cut up and sewn together like patchwork. Only five were up for sale in North America (Beyoncé Knowles bought one) with 24 available worldwide. Chanel one-upped the designer by introducing an alligator-skin bag trimmed with white gold and studded with 3.56 carats of diamonds--only 13 were available worldwide.

While some over-the-top "it" bags get snatched up before they even hit the shelves, others are making their way into stores this month. Two extremes will score big this spring: the large, hand-held satchel or tote with multiple interior pockets, and the medium- to large-sized envelope clutch.

Purses with "it" potential for spring have a classic, ladylike vibe such as the YSL Majorelle, the champagne-hued Roger Vivier with his signature buckle flap and the metallic Gucci Queen hobo. Other, more playful contenders include the candy-colored Richard Prince for Louis Vuitton Motarde frame bags, the chic, green calfskin Kate Spade tote and the Carlos Falchi python clutch in bright orange.

With many high-end bags made in Italy and the Euro still going strong, prices for bags hitting stores this month could continue to rise, forcing the aspirational consumer to cut back. But the rich likely will not go empty-handed. "The very wealthy, the people for whom these bags were always intended, will continue to buy their 'it' bags," Atkins says. "For these women, no price is too high."

Paris designers tone down the bling as economic fears loom

The Associated Press

PARIS: The Paris ready-to-wear collections entered their final stretch on Sunday, capping a season overshadowed by fears of recession that saw many designers shunning ostentatious luxury for a more understated elegance. Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens captured the mood with his autumn-winter collection for Nina Ricci, sending out artfully disheveled outfits in heirloom satins, velvets and silks.

Models ambled through a tent in the Tuileries gardens in deconstructed jackets over slim pants in rich shades of sienna, purple and gold. Jacket shoulders were deliberately knocked back, while inset panels followed the body's natural curve. "I wanted to approach each item in the collection like the ultimate standalone piece," Theyskens told reporters after the show.

For evening, he gave Empress Josephine a rock chick makeover, sending out Empire-line gowns in dusty flesh colors that split open in the back for a semi-undressed feel. "I find that sensual," he said. "There is an undone, nonchalant side that I like a lot." The Paris shows were set to conclude with displays by designer Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and Alber Elbaz for Lanvin.

With the dollar hitting an all-time low against the euro, U.S. retailers have cut back their overall spending and homed in on pieces with a lifespan of more than one season. Glenda Bailey, editor in chief of the U.S. edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine, said the distressed suits seen at Chanel earlier this week summed up the current mood. "We want to have luxury, but we don't want it to be too overt. We want to look like it's something that is very personal to us," she said. "The secret of next season really is all about personal style. It's about putting together a look which is right for you."

Current Handbag Affairs: Limiting designer handbag sales & heavy purse concerns

Designer handbag woes are a joke. Warnings are on Television, online and on the news. Everywhere you surf or shop, you can read about or hear about two current issues concerning a woman's handbag:

1. Health issues concerning women who carry a heavy handbag and

2. limiting designer handags sales imposed by the department stores.

Do you think it's a coincidence? First, we hear about how unhealthy handbags are becoming, and then we are told we can't buy as many as we want. It is all quite humorous.

FIRST - Health Concerns and A Heavy Handbag

The concern of health related issues around carrying a heavy handbag has been on T.V. talk shows, the news and online. When was the last time anyone wrote a story or news flash about the weight a Pharmaceutical Salesperson lugs around on his/her Doctor office visits? These folks use bags on wheels the load is so heavy! And, they do it everyday from the trunk of a car or van, up flights of stairs, on elevators, down long hallways, through crowds and some even inside and out of taxis. Or, what about the lap top industry taking notice about the weight people carry around all day to do their jobs? Most women carry a large bag because they commute to work and need extra items to make it through the day. Or, they are too busy to clean out the bag before they leave the house. Students have been lugging heavy book bags for year. What's their health concerns? You may think it is a joke, but some women like carrying a large purse because it makes them feel smaller. There are a lot of big women who think they look strange carrying anything less than a large bag. A bag plus normal contents equals normal handbag weight.

There are many large handbag styles that weight little. Chanel, even with its long chain straps, uses light weight lamb leather and vinyl in its designs. The USA brand of Tano all-leather bags are light weight considering their size. Gucci uses monogram fabric in their construction making the bag weight tolerable.

Women who commute and travel to and from work everday enjoy taking a bottle of water, a book to read, some munchies and female essentials. These women either carry a small purse and a second tote bag/briefcase or one large attractive designer handbag. This does not mean the same weight in a purse is carried out to dinner on a Saturday night or when shopping at the grocery store. There's a purpose behind the heavy handbag, and it hasn't caused any life-threatening disease. We may want to look closer at these "handbag rental" companies who pass along germs and viruses from person-to-person instead. Yuck, just the thought of using a handbag a stranger has carried is repulsive. Renting a designer handbag poses more health issues than carrying a heavy bag!

SECOND - Limiting designer handbag sales by the department stores.

This is such an unrealistic predictor of designer bag sales. Most of the websites in question have had a limit on the number of designer items they would sell regardless of the "breaking news." Plus, it won't hurt the sale or resale of designer purses. Women will buy what they want and figure out a way to get it regardless of anyone's rules! What we should really be focused upon is the prices women pay for their fashion icon purchases. Seems like there's a much bigger issue here than quantity. The issue should be quality and cost. The weakness of the USD plays an important part, too. Some handbags sell for the same price as a new car! That's what we need to look at. Not, how many we are allowed to purchase, but rather how much we have to pay to own one.

The best materials come from Europe. Italy's leather and designs have ranked the highest over the years. However, if the same bag was assembled in a more cost-effective manner, the price would be less. The hype about Hermes, Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Burberry, etc. is all just a matter of taste, style and design. Some of the design houses are notorious about pricing. Others, focus more on production and distribution. Then, the counterfeit market jumps onboard and screws it up for all of us. In the end, it doesn't matter how much women are allowed to purchase, it's how they can figure out a way to manipulate the system to get what they want.

The best example is the Hermes Birkin bag. The bag is large, heavy, hand-held and high-priced. Most women who want one figure out a way to get it even though they are rarely available through Hermes. Look at eBay. There are sellers on eBay who list 10-15 Birkin bags. Where are they getting these bags if Hermes limits the manufacturing, distribution and resale of the coveted Birkin? Someone figured out a way to buy them regardless of the Designer's decision for limiting sales. Honestly, most women who carry a Birkin suffer from hand, wrist and neck pain due to its weight. Even Jane Birkin herself reports she stopped carrying the bag because over time it became too painful. The empty Birkin bag outweighs any other handbag filled with a person's daily essentials.

Are we concened? Is there something we need to worry about? Or, is the designer handbag industry looking for ways to sell more bags? The fashion bag industry is booming. In 2005, the average cost of a designer purse the major high-end department stores was about $2000. In 2007, the same item averaged about $3000. A woman's designer handbag wishes are here to stay regardless of health issues, availability and cost. Women get what they want, and in the fashion industry they suffer to look good! This is not going to change or fade away in the near future. So, go shopping and carry on....it doesn't matter how much you spend or how much it weighs. Every working woman deserves the designer handbag of their dreams!

Making a statement's in the bag

By SARAH HOWDEN

OPEN any glossy magazine and its pages will be peppered with the latest looks, hot off the catwalk. Look a bit closer, however, and you'll discover that it's not just the clothes that are taking centre stage any more. Today's savvy shoppers are more likely to mix cleverly chosen high street buys with key pieces – bags in particular. But this season's designs haven't been created merely with functionality in mind, they are style statements in their own right. Bags have become lifestyle necessities and fashion accessories, and it seems having only one – or even two, three or four – just won't do.

More than £350 million is spent on handbags in the UK every year, according to a Mintel report, and apparently the average 30-year-old today owns a staggering 21 handbags and buys a new one every three months. With many designer bags now coming with a three, four or even five-figure price tag – like this season's "must-have" Burberry Warrior which is a whopping £13,000 – just what is the attraction? "They appeal to everyone, irrespective of size, age or shape," explains Mulberry's creative director, Stuart Vevers. "It's something every woman needs to carry as well, so people don't mind spending a bit more money on things they use every day – especially if they think it will last more than one season."

Sam Withal of the Sam Thomas Accessories boutique in William Street agrees. "Accessories have changed. The bag is now as important as the coat or the shoes." Three bag-lovers reveal their precious collection and explain just what the attraction is.

LISA ROWAN
High-street, designer or knock-offs, so long as they make her look and feel great, Lisa Rowan doesn't mind. So it's no surprise that the 32-year-old events manager for The Caves has more than 40 bags worth in excess of £5000. "The first bag I ever bought was a merlot-coloured velvet DKNY bag that I love and still use loads today. I just love how a great bag can make you feel . Even if you're having a fat day a bag will always fit you. "It's not always about the label – it just has to have that special something that makes you immediately fall in love with it. A bag keeps you up to date and makes a style statement. "

Lisa's favourites are her understated Mulberry and Miu Miu bags, but she's already got her eye on Prada's multi-coloured shoulder bag. "I don't have lists for the season – I just see something that catches my eye, something makes me feel six foot tall with 36 inch legs . . . a girl can dream."

AIMI HAUTAU
With designer bags from labels such as Paul Smith, Chanel, Mulberry, Tanner Krolle and Stuart Gladstone, Aimi Hautau has more than 30 handbags in her current collection. "I've always loved handbags" laughs the 32-year-old stylist for Jenners. "In all my childhood photos they mostly seem to be me with either a bag or my mum's high heels on. "I now have well over 30 – some of them have even still got the stuffing inside them because I've never used them. From time to time I like to get them out and look at them. I get a bit worried about using them though as I don't want to damage them. It's completely insane and irrational, I know, but that a woman's relationship with her bags."

According to Aimi, a woman's love affair with handbags is down to the style – and lifestyle – statement they make. "It's a bit like looking at a man's shoes or tie to judge his taste," she adds. Aimi's collection reads like the Harvey Nichols accessory department, with a Mulberry Piccadilly (£795) and a Paul Smith shoulder bag (£495) among her collection totalling more than £6000. This season alone Aimi hopes to snap up the Marc Jacobs Deep Shopper (£690) and a Stuart Gladstone OZ in shocking pink (£75).

"I always look for size as they need to be a reasonable size so I can fit my life in them," she explains. "It also needs to be something that will look good with at least four or five of my outfits . . . although I have been known to plan the outfits around the bag. And what does her husband think? "He just prays we never have a daughter otherwise he'll have to work nights as well. "Honestly, men just don't understand."

HANNAH TULLOCH
Like Aimi, 29-year-old Hannah Tulloch's love of bags started early. "I used to watch mum pack her handbag in the morning, and there was something mysterious about what she put in them," recalls the assistant buyer at Hamilton and Inches. "She had and still has an enviable collection of bags."

The self-confessed "handbag whore" now boasts a designer collection of around 25 bags, including two Mulberrys, one YSL and a Gucci. "I'd rather not eat for a month if it meant I could afford the bag of my dreams – there's just something about them, from the way they're made to how they make you feel," she laughs. "I think you can also tell a lot about a woman and her bag. She can be dressed in jeans and a T-shirt but if she's clutching a bag that costs £400 upwards, you know she means business. It's all about the statement they make."

With Mulberry's patent Roxanne tote and Alexander McQueen's Elvie bag on her wish list, doesn't the value of her bags – which surely must be around £10,000 – shock her? "I could have probably paid off my student loan by now if I didn't buy bags, but it's worth it. I think women only buy bags to impress other women with anyway!"

WHAT YOURS SAYS ABOUT YOU...
"HANDBAGS and their contents say much more about our personality than we might think," says Kathy Eisman, author of How to Tell a Woman by Her Handbag. "While you can't judge a book by its cover, they can help you unlock and understand the secrets of their personality." Stephanie Pedersen of What Every Woman Should Know says: "Women who prefer shoulder bags refuse to be a fashion victim."

She also says the Tote Bag girl is fun-loving, generous and sociable, with a youthful outlook, while the Clutch Bagger is confident and doesn't need her whole life in a bag. A small handbag tucked under the shoulder implies sophistication and class, and though It Bag lovers may look on-trend, they're also high-maintenance – it's a reflection of expensive tastes. Women who go for an oversized bag are practical people – and they're seriously hip for spring/summer 2008.

A pair of sparkly earrings lends …..

Big is certainly beautiful

GERALDINE PANAPASA

In every era, the definition of fashion has varied. What may have been fashionable 50 years ago would not necessarily be so now. But some fashion items are eternal, and resurface in a redefined form every now and again. Clothes, shoes, handbags, sunglasses and hairstyles of different designs have all undergone transformation or revival. The big craze now is accessories or excessive accessories. Some of these accessories would include jewellery such as earrings, bracelets, rings, ornamental hair combs and necklaces. Gone are the days when only women wore accessories to complement their outfit or to cover the plainness of their outfit.

Men can also be big fans of fashion accessories. Some men wear an earring on one ear or a nose-ring, bangles, rings. If you look around carefully, you can find all sorts of great accessories. Accessories are becoming a must-have item for most people. Colourful bangles and earrings have been eye-catching recently. The discerning person now prefers wearing locally-designed accessories to suit the weather and culture. Many local designers come up with all sorts of ideas to make their products outstanding and conspicuous.

Another two fashion accessories noticeable everywhere and anywhere are handbags and sunglasses. Those big old bags our ancestors used in ancient times are back in fashion but this time, the size and designs are slightly modified to be even more eye-catching and stylish. Matching the desires of the 21st century fashion statements, big fashion handbags and sunglasses are the most demanding accessories in Fiji. Large bags really matter especially when innumerable accessories have been produced to fit the different compartments in the bag. These large almost duffle-looking bags are also very convenient.

The many compartments sewn into it are spacious enough to fit anything and everything including wallets or purse, mobile phones, diaries, clothes and even shoes. Amazingly, the more stuffed the bag is, the more fashionable it looks. In Fiji, almost every second female walking the city streets is seen with one of these fashion bags. With every change in fashion comes a change in designer handbags. Some of these latest handbags have cowboy leather frills tagged in the front giving off that funky yet casual look.

Other coloured fashion handbags have silver linings and rings on the bag straps and front pockets radiating a mix of heavy metal and hip hop frenzy. Huge go-go sunglasses are also setting the stage for a unique look. However, not just any particular go-go sunglasses, these are the ones similar to those in that Austin Powers movie.Thick bands for the sunglasses have designs that spell out distinctive' and exceptional'. Apart from serving its original purpose of keeping the eyes safe from excessive light, sunglasses are now fashionable, unique and gorgeous. Fashion accessories are setting the stage for new looks in Fiji.
